sewing spandex

Spandex is a wonderful fabric that is known to make garments for active wear. Feels so good on and it looks really good too! Unlike other materials, this one is stretchy, which means that you can move around freely and comfortably whilst being active, from running to jumping to playing sports. But there is a little challenge to sew with Spandex especially if you never did before. That’s a good reason though to make sure that you have some good advice to aid you in sewing well! This guide offers simple tips that are sure to set you up to successfully sew spandex and make amazing activewear that you can feel proud of!

Use the Proper Needle: Perhaps the biggest tip for sewing with spandex is to select the proper type of needle. Needle – This should be a needle designed for stretch fabric. Stretchy fabrics have less chance to hurt it, so a ballpoint needle is the most suitable option for sewing knit fabrics. Using an overly shary needle can leave tiny holes in the spandex, which are very hard to patch later.

Creating Comfortable and Stylish Activewear with Spandex

Always stretch the fabric whilst you sew: You have to ensure that you stretch the fabric gently while sewing it together. This, in turn, helps to keep the fabric neat and makes sure, that the fabric does not pucker or bunch up. You can accomplish this by lightly tugging on the fabric while sewing. But be careful! Pull it too taut, and your final result may not turn out correctly; it may become misshapen and or unbalanced.

Sew with a Zigzag Stitch: The best kind of stitch to use for spandex is a zigzag one. This kind of stitch also enables the fabric to stretch and move without snapping the thread. A zig zag stitch is best as it allows stretch- this is in 'zig zag' on your sewing machine. Be sure to adjust the stitch length and width as needed for your project, as different designs may require different lengths and widths.
